Education is a noble business pursuit, and teachers are the most valuable resource in any for-profit educational company is the teachers. Many businesses have (correctly) realized that the best people to manage their teaching team are former teachers themselves.
That’s where the problems usually start.

Managing and teaching are two different jobs, requiring vastly different skills. The assumption that someone can manage a team because they’ve been a good member of that team is an all too frequent mistake. Administration, HR, coordinating with other departments, difficult conversations, when to be tough, when to be lenient, how to build a culture, and how to make sure teacher’s get what they need… all of this can bury a new manager and leave them unable to do their job. This is traumatic for the manager, and worse, can be devastating for the teachers.

This book is a starter guide, a collection of all the knowledge I’ve built in the 17 years I’ve worked with some of the best in the industry, facing all kinds of challenges, in different kinds of organizations. This book can help a founder build their academic department, academic leaders build their teams, and most importantly, new managers find their feet in a very challenging job.

More than this book also proscribes a very particular view of managing teachers: that the best way to build a successful education business is to put the most important people first: the teachers.
